Resetting an Android Smartphone to Factory Settings
“Factory settings” means restoring your smartphone to the state it was in when it left the factory. This deletes all user data, such as photos, contacts, emails, chat histories, and music. Apps installed after purchase are also deleted, including any apps that may be used to spy on you. Data stored on memory cards added later is not affected.
When Is a Factory Reset Useful?
A smartphone can be reset for several reasons:
- You want to give away or sell the phone without leaving your personal data on it.
- You have, or suspect you have, a virus or malicious app on the phone.
- You no longer trust your phone, its apps, or the data stored on it.
How Can I Keep My Data?
Your data needs to be stored outside the phone first. Photos and music can be uploaded to the cloud (Google or Apple) or saved to an SD card. If you are very worried about losing your data, a phone repair shop can help. Many small shops that repair phones can also reset them to factory settings and save your data to a USB stick. Change Your Google Password
- Log in to Google from a computer you consider secure. If you think your computer or laptop may also be monitored, use a public computer at an internet café or library, or ask a friend for help.
- Check which devices are currently connected to your account.
- Disconnect all devices except the one you are currently using.
- Change your password using a secure-password guide.
- Set a PIN of at least five digits for your smartphone, and never leave it unlocked and unattended.
Your device should now be in a fresh and more secure state.
