How Do I Reconfigure My DSL Router?
A DSL router can be a security risk because an (ex-)partner may be able to
access devices on your Wi-Fi network, for example through apps connected
to your router. If your (ex-)partner has moved out, the router should
therefore be set up again from scratch.
Step by Step
- Make sure you have the contract documents from your phone/DSL provider, including your contract number, access ID, and password.
- Search online for your specific DSL router model, or ask us for help.
- Save or print the instructions first, because you will not have DSL or Wi-Fi access while setting up the router.
- Reset the DSL router to factory settings. This means restoring it to the state it was in when it left the factory.
- Set it up again using your own access credentials.
- Choose a secure password for the router itself and for your Wi-Fi. See also: What are Secure Passwords and How Do I manage Them?
- Set up a guest Wi-Fi network. Most routers offer this functionality.
